Montevideo, Jan 10 (epa-efe).- Uruguay will bring tango to its coast with the first edition of the La Pedrera Tango Festival, an event that will gather dozens of artists seeking to bring this typical rhythm to tourists on the beaches of the southeastern province of Rocha.

The Jan. 17-19 event will feature the screening of films related to tango as well as live concerts at the La Pedrera village and resort.

Uruguay’s national tourism director, Carlos Fagetti, told EFE that the event seeks to «add diversity» to La Pedrera’s appeal, as well as to bring young people to tango and celebrate the 120th anniversary of the iconic beach.

Likewise, the event is part of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of UNESCO’s addition of the tango to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

«These days La Pedrera is having a very good season. It’s this festival’s first year and as it grows, I think it will become a classic and will attract tourists to that place,» Fagetti said.

Festival director Fernando Rossi told EFE that the desire is for people to respond and to be able to gather people of all ages around tango.

For that reason, the event will include artists with traditional approaches and also new groups with a «more electronic» sound.
