Montevideo, May 15 (efe-epa).- A goal scored by Argentine striker Diego Churin on Tuesday brought his team, Club Cerro Porteno from Paraguay, to the round of 16 of the 2018 Copa Libertadores in their match against Defensor Sporting Club of Uruguay, in Montevideo.
With Churin’s goal, Cerro Porteno beat Defensor Sporting by 0-1, eliminating the Uruguayan team from the Copa.
The match kicked off the fifth day of Group A and initially ended without a single goal in regular time
However, during extra time, Churin scored the game-sealing goal for his team, dashing the hope of Defensor Sporting who needed another win to continue in the league.
With this victory, the Paraguayan team became leader of Group A, while the other two teams of the group, Gremio from Brazil and Monagas SC from Venezuela, are playing in Venezuela.
No goals were scored in the first half of the match. in the second half, with time pressure for both sides, both teams began to move closer to the opposite goal, especially Defensor, who, in addition to being at home, began to feel the need to score to stay alive in the competition.
For this reason, coaches of both team adapted their strategies by substituting their players on various occasions.
The second half saw no goals either. Although Juan Boselli from Defensor and Churin from Cerro Porteno made hard-fought attempts to shoot, both of them failed.
In the 91st minute, the Argentine striker finally scored the winning goal for Cerro Porteno thanks to his speed and a skillful pass from his teammate, Alfio Oviedo.
Although Rodriguez threw himself in to save the shot, Churin’s shot went over him and entered the box.
In the sixth and final day of Group A, Defensor Sporting will face Gremio while Cerro Porteno will play against Monagas in Asuncion.
