Beijing, Jun 13 (efe-epa).- The secretary of State of the United States is to meet with the Chinese foreign minister in Beijing this week to discuss the progress made in the historic US-North Korea summit in Singapore, China said Wednesday.
China’s Foreign Ministry said that Mike Pompeo and Wang Yi are scheduled to meet and hold a joint press conference on Thursday.
Pompeo was part of the delegation that participated in the Singapore summit on Tuesday between the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.
The US State Department had already said that Pompeo would travel to South Korea and China after the summit, to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues.
On Tuesday, Trump and Kim signed a joint statement in which Pyongyang committed to working on its complete denuclearization and Washington promised to provide security guarantees.
The Singapore summit was the first between the two countries’ sitting heads after nearly 70 years of confrontation in the wake of the Korean War (1950-1953), and 25 years of failed negotiations and tensions over the North Korea’s nuclear program.
