Guayaquil, Ecuador, May 15 (efe-epa).- A 19th-minute goal from Andres Chicaiza Morales gave Delfin a 1-0 win over Copa Libertadores Group B leaders Atletico Nacional on Tuesday and opened the way for both teams to qualify for the next round.
With only one day left before the closing of the group stage, Atletico Nacional from Colombia still leads Group B with 9 points while Ecuador’s Delfin has risen from the bottom to second place with 7 points.
With the group leader defeated in the recent match, Chile’s Colo Colo can climb from third place and also reach 7 points if it defeats Bolivia’s Club Bolivar at home.
Although Atletico Nacional changed its game plan in the second half and attempted to score a goal, Delfin managed to get ahead first with the goal of Chicaiza, which entered the right corner of the box guarded by goalkeeper Fernando Monetti.
Monetti later shattered Delfin’s hope for a second goal in the 39th minute when he pulled off a save against a header of Henry Canga.
Atletico Nacional’s first opportunity to score came in the 57th minute when Gustavo Torres attempted a shot but failed.
In the sixth and final day of the group stage on June 24, Atletico Nacional will host Colo Colo and Bolivar will host Delfin.
